As the name implies it is a device that enables the clutch to slip - but only on down shifts, where excessive engine braking can cause the rear wheel to lock. This device will let the clutch release when there is too much engine braking - i.e. when heavy braking and down shifting rapidly. Corners can be entered faster and more safely... the stability of the rear of the bike gives confidence and you can feel the back wheel giving the grip rather than it sliding on the down changes! Slipper clutches can transform your corner entry style and allow passing manoeuvres you wouldn't have the confidence to do without one... especially in wet weather riding! Ever wondered how the worlds best 4 stroke riders enter corners so fast under complete control? They might have some fancy electronics helping them but they have a slipper clutch fitted as well. Fitted as standard to high spec racing bikes, these are now available for a select range of sports bikes and Super Motard bikes.

SIGMA
SIGMA slipper clutches have proven themselves to be a reliable and tough addition to many a racing teams armoury. On their very first outing in a Ducati back in 1998 they won a World Superbike support race at Donington and in 2004 at Brands Hatch won in their very first British Supersport race on Jay Vincent's Padgett's CBR 600. The Yamaha R1 2004 version also had a great year winning the Canadian Superbike championship with Pascal Picotte.
